Simply put, our club could not exist year after year without the support and talents of our wonderfully diverse membership. Globe BMX Raceway Inc. has no paid positions or hired personnel—every aspect of track maintenance and the successful execution of our racing events is 100% organized, managed, and carried out by volunteers. Below is a brief overview of some of the volunteer positions where we are always in need of help:
RACE DAYS
Announcer: Broadcasts the races and keeps spectators informed and energized with dynamic, real-time commentary—maintaining high energy, building excitement, and keeping the crowd fully engaged throughout the event. At times will be required to call riders to the staging area.
Chief Commissaire: This position oversees all race activities to ensure events are fair, safe, and conducted according to BMX regulations. Acts as the official authority on the track, managing rule enforcement, rider conduct, race results, and any required relegations from start to finish. Must hold a valid BMX Commissaire license.
Finish Line Assistant (2 volunteers): 1) Calls out plate numbers as racers cross the finish line – may video close finishes for accuracy. 2) Scribes the finishing order on paper. Both communicate all recorded results clearly to the Finish Line Commissaire.
Finish Line Commissaire: Compiles finish line observations and enters race results into Sqorz BMX software. Communicates closely with other track officials to record DNS (did not start), DNF (did not finish), and REL (relegations) violations, and ensures all results are accurate and complete before finalization. Makes final decision on close calls.
First Aid Personnel: Provides on-site medical support in case of injuries. Assesses riders after falls and delivers necessary first aid care. Must hold a valid First Aid certificate and be present on site before practice laps or races can begin. A first aid kit (back pack) is provided by Globe BMX.
Gate Operator/Setup: Sets up, operates, and puts away the gate for practice laps and races. Works closely with the Commissaries, staying alert in case the gate needs to be held. Maintains constant awareness of riders on the gate and on the track, and performs quick safety checks—ensuring helmets are secured, laces aren’t hanging, and wheels are properly aligned before each start.
Lower Staging: Organizes riders in the staging area into their assigned motos and lane positions by calling out names and lanes. Uses a moto sheet to ensure racers are staged on time, and promptly communicates with the announcer if a rider is missing.
Race Director Commissaire: Responsible for making and posting the motos. Ensures that all volunteers are in their positions, that First Aid is ready, and that the track is ready to race. Oversees how the race is being run and generally fills any position or helps as needed during the race.
Registration: This role uses the Race Director’s laptop to check in racers. Confirms each rider’s plate number and calculated age, and marks a “Yes” next to every name to ensure all riders are accounted for before the Race Director completes final moto preparation.
Starter/Upper Staging: Calls out riders’ names and lane assignments to organize them into their designated gates at the top of the start hill. Ensures riders have on proper equipment – ensuring helmets are secured, laces aren’t hanging and the bike is race ready.
Track Corner Official Commissaires (2 volunteers): Is on the track during practice laps and races, monitoring for infractions, crashes, and rider safety. Watches key areas such as corners, assists riders when needed, and serves as the eyes and ears on the track for inappropriate behavior. Reports all issues to the Chief Commissaire and assists them in managing and resolving any concerns.
Track Preparation (2 volunteers): Volunteers walk the entire track to remove rocks and other hazards, rakes excess rocks/dirt off the track, sweeps to smooth loose dirt. Responsible for setting up the hoses from the sea can, connecting them to the water supply, and watering the straight sections to control dust. Chalks the race lines – corners, straights, and finish line. This preparation ensures a safer, well-packed track for racers, while also giving officials a clear view for any relegations. Support during race and practice events with quick touch-ups and emergency fixes as required.
Track Safety: Helps to ensure the safety of the racers on the track. Helps riders become untangled from bikes and calls for first aid as needed. Volunteers can assist riders with their bikes during a crash, but should not advance the rider in any form during assistance.
911 Caller: Under the direction of the First Aid Personnel, if it is required, calls and directs the ambulance into the park.
SPECIAL EVENTS (ALL THE ABOVE, PLUS THE FOLLOWING)
Concession Stand: Prepares and sells food/drink items.
Prize Table: Sells raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets.
Setup of Seating Area, Bike Parking, etc.: Uses pylons to designate the area for spectators (should use the big pylons with the banners on it) and an area for racers to park their bikes. Sets up registration tables if not already completed.
Tear Down: Assists in taking down and putting away all items after event.
